The small fishing village of Alvor has some of the most beautiful sites, high quality cuisine and range of activities on offer in the region of the Algarve. Traditionally a stronghold of Moorish occupation, there are remnants of Manueline arches and pillars still standing in Alvor; the town has been steadily being improved since the 1960s at the start of the tourist influx to the area. The riverfront has been done up and is now paved and lined with palm trees and beach bars, many a tourist chooses to spend their days relaxing here, enjoying the sight of the boats that sail up the river. And if you want to eat you don't have to go far, just near by there is a collection of restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the view whilst partaking of the region's delectable seaside cuisine. The town itself is a wonderful place to just wander, not so big that you have to worry too much about getting lost; there are a collection of little shops as well as a range of bars, restaurants and cafes in which to stop for a refreshing bite. The village is also not far from two of the Algarve's biggest cities: Lagos and Portimao and both are easily accessible by public transport even if you haven't hired a car. Portimao is a host city for many large sailing events which draws in the best sailing teams from all over the world. These events are spectacular to watch and the seas in the area test the sailors and skippers to the limits of their abilities. Portimao also has a large selection of shops and is particularly well regarded for its leather goods.
Lagos is a historic town with medieval walls and an ancient marina with a drawbridge that is still functioning. The town is an ancient one that speaks of a vast and lengthy history; this area is particularly rich in ancient architecture that dates back as far as Roman times and speaks of the vast and intricate history that Portugal boasts. Lagos also has various shops to wander around, quality restaurants and bars and is particularly famous for its nightlife.
